A Great Way to "Read" the Bible January 7, 2009 This is a great recording. I had hoped that the tween voice actors featured from hit TV shows and movies would make my 10 year old daughter reach for these discs instead of other audiobooks that she likes to listen to while she's cleaning her room (or avoiding cleaning her room), but they haven't.br /br /However -- I love it! The narration is good, and there is some background music and sound effects which make it highly listenable (just enough -- not so much that it's overly dramatic). The other thing that I enjoy is the very short introduction to each book as recorded by Max and/or Jenna Lucado.br /br /The other thing that's great is it came with a 40 day plan to listen to the NT in 40 days. The chunk that I listened to was two-days worth, so I can see that it's completely doable. I enjoy listening to audiobooks as I'm doing housework (or avoiding it!), and in the car.br /br /One drawback for me is that I'm not sure what translation it is. Maybe I missed it, but I couldn't find it in the liner notes or in the product description or even their website. I did pull up versions online and it's similar to the New Century Version or the New Living Translation, so I am assuming it's some sort of new translation, but it's not identified as such.
Word of Promise Next Generation NT January 6, 2009 Although it wasn't a book, I enjoyed listening to The Word of Promise Next Generation New Testament's audio Bible; and I was pretty skeptical to how good it would be. This version is very different to the James Earl Jones version, which I think most would agree (hands down) is the best version available. Still, The Word of Promise Next Generation was able to hold its own, specifically with characteristics that appeal to a younger population. It includes an impressively talented cast (including several celebrities: Max Lucado, Corbin Bleu, Sean Astin, and Jordan Sparks, just to name a few). Each narrator was able to use their voice in an extraordinary manner, bringing life and attention to the stories of the New Testament. I am confident in saying that this version would attract and interest new and young Christians or even those seeking to learn more about God's Word. It is read from the International Children's Bible version. If you work with preteens, teens, and young adults, I want to recommend this CD series as an excellent resource to include in your teaching learning library.
Interesting, good for kids. January 5, 2009 Overall good, especially for kids/preteens. I thought some of people selected as the voices were interesting choices to be reading the Bible, and several of the characters sound very young, but overall a good product. I wouldn't have rated it quite so highly if my preschool age daughter didn't love listening listening to it, and actually requests to listen to the Bible. We've listened to the book of John alone 3 times through. I think a CD format would be better, as the MP3 won't play in our car CD player or anything, but it is fine for listening to on the computer, and I understand it keeps the price down. It wouldn't be MY first choice to listen to the Bible in this format, but I'm thrilled that my daughter loves it, and it's a version that is easier for her to understand, without being just Bible Stories.
The Word of Promise Next Generation NT January 5, 2009 I've listened to several audio versions of The Bible, both Old and New Testament and found listening to "The Word of Promise Next Generation New Testament" very interesting. The variety of voices and inflections of their reading brings the stories of the New Testament to life that I think many young people will find an easier way to get themselves into scripture. I'm not one to be able to actually listen to audio books as my mind tends to wander and before I know it I've missed half of what is being said. As a very visual person I absorb things better by actually having something in my hands to read. So I found that as enjoyable as listening to the MP3 CD's were my mind continued to wander off track and nothing can replace actually sitting down with a hard copy of scripture, highlighting, taking notes and marking verses and stories I may want to reference later.br /br /There are a couple of things that I wish were different about the CD's. As a mobile generation of iPods, and CD players (yep, still use one) I would have found listening more enjoyable if I could've taken them with me to play in the car while driving or to listen to in various parts of the house. I also would have preferred it if it had been broken down by books, rather than by chapters of each book. I would have found this a lot easier to save to my itunes and then put on my iPod.br /br /Bottom line though if anyone is looking for a different way to introduce our younger generation to the New Testament, this may very well be something that they might want to look into.Word of Promise Next Generation - New Testament: Dramatized Audio Bible
Nice for Easy Listening January 3, 2009 I found the Word of Promise New Testament on MP3 to be enjoyable listening. Now if you want to actually study the New Testament (or part of it) in any kind of serious way, I recommend you purchase a NIV or NAS with wide margins and some pens. Read slowly. Take notes in the margins. Draw arrows. But if you want to fill your mind with good thoughts and are tired or listening to Christian music, I highly recommend Word of Promise. The translation is easy to listen to because it is not to academic. The actors did a good job. (Jesus was a little sappy, but that is how He is usually portrayed in audio or video.) The sound effects were really well done. Not overwhelming, they added just the right touch. The speaking speed is way to slow for my taste (as are most audio books), but that's ok because I listened to it in Windows Media Player on fast play which was perfect. Some of the book introductions I found annoying or questionable, but you can easily skip them if you don't want to listen since they are a separate MP3. br /br /My biggest complaint is the incompatibility with Zune. My Zune (even with my IT husband's help) would never open the whole thing at once. It was 2 chapters from Acts and 3 chapters from John, etc. The silly thing would never download the whole CD or even a whole book. For this reason I give this audio Bible 4 stars.
