Precious Illustrations January 6, 2009
As with her books of nursery rhymes, Mary Englebreit has taken classic bedtime stories and embellished them with her charming illustrations. Wonderful!
Excellent versions, great illustrations December 22, 2008

We picked this as an afterthought and found it to be a delightful surprise. The selection of classic fairy tales, from Grimm and Anderson, is excellent--not a bad story in the lot. Our little boy asked to read all of the stories, and requested some several times. What is great about the stories is that, on the one hand, they are somewhat condensed over some versions you may have encountered, they are told in a very engaging way. I should mention that the stories are also made even more harmless than they are often made. The Gingerbread Boy isn't eaten by the fox; he barely escapes, which our boy seemed to think was a nice change. And while the Big Bad Wolf does gulp up Granny and Little Red Riding Hood, the woodcutter doesn't kill the wolf, etc., he merely gives him a good scolding, and that does the trick. This isn't done out of some stupid bowdlerization of the tales. Instead, as the introduction says, Engelbreit is "an artist of kindliness and comfort"--something our little boy definitely responded to. This is the best collection of simple fairy tales for a young preschooler we've yet found.

This is a fun book that is a great addition to our collection. The pictures are great. We have the mother goose book which is a big hit so I was nervous that this one might not be as good. You know expecting too much but we love it.

This story was on a show I watched once!"br /br /Cayden: "Is a cloak like a jacket?"br /br /Max: "Wolf! Grrrrrr!"br /Cayden: "Yes, she better watch out! The wolf is going to trick her!"br /br /Cayden: "Doesn't she know that is the wolf and not her grandma? Look at it, it has fur and her grandma doesn't have fur! When can we read them?"br /br /Parent's comments:br /br /The review copy that we received was a sampling of the book, one full story ("Little Red Riding Hood"), and an illustration from each of the other tales. From the story that we were provided, this collection looks to be a great one! My children wanted to read "Little Red Riding Hood" three times in a row. They loved looking at the wonderful Mary Engelbreit illustrations which were bright and engaging and definitely added to the classic nursery tales.br /br /
