Loved it then, love it now January 4, 2009 I loved the Frances books when I was a child. I love reading the Frances books to my children. Frances is a delightful character who makes you smile with her witty songs and her unique view of the world.br /Bread and Jam is probably my favorite Frances story. I love the detailed descriptions of the food. Frances is a typical picky eater who only wants to eat bread and jam, everyday. Frances' parents allow their determined daughter to do just that. Frances learns a wonderful lesson about variety. br /The illustrations are detailed and soft. They match the excellence of the story.br /The length is perfect and it is a wonderful read- aloud book.
3rd generation favorite December 26, 2008 The Frances books were popular with my daughter when she was a young child and with me as well. I recently bought all of the available titles for my twin grandsons (4.5 years old). I love the little songs that Frances sings. Common childhood situations crop up in the stories - in this one, children's food phases - and parental solutions are creative, kind and effective.
Awesome Book September 24, 2008 Reviewed by Sophia McElroy (age 5.5) for Reader Views (9/08) br /br / "Bread and Jam for Frances" by Russell Hoban is an awesome book! It made me feel "laughy" all over. The songs were funny and I liked to sing them. It has a little sad part when Frances doesn't want to eat jam anymore. I like peanut butter and jelly, but not all the time. I like the pictures, they are funny!br /br /
Cute testament to picky eaters September 13, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Such a cute book! I was so happy to get my hands on a copy, because you just don't see much writing like this anymore. The story is cute, the writing style is wonderful with plenty of sing-song, and it has a cute message about learning to try different kinds of food.
Shades of Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle! September 12, 2008 Frances is a picky eater. She likes bread and jam because it's consistent.br /br /Her parents are understandably upset by this, but they deal with it in the most practical way - they give her exactly enough bread and jam to fill her up for life.br /br /The story is resolved very quickly, after only a day, but satisfyingly. "How do you know what I'll like if you don't even let me try it?" indeed.
