Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Review
"I am Eloise/I am six." So begins the well-loved story of Eloise, the garrulous little girl who lives at New York's Plaza Hotel. Eyebrow raised defiantly, arm propped on one jutting hip, Eloise is a study in self-confidence. Eloise's personal mandate is "Getting bored is not allowed," so she fills her days to the brim with wild adventures and self-imposed responsibilities. An average Eloise afternoon includes braiding her pet turtle's ears, ordering "one roast-beef bone, one raisin and seven spoons" from room service, and devising innovative methods of torture for her guardians. PEloise's exploits are non-stop, and--accordingly--the text uses nary a period. Kay Thompson perfectly captures the way children speak: in endless sentences elongated with "and then ... and then ... and then... " Hilary Knight's drawings illustrate Eloise's braggadocio and amusement as well as the bewilderment of harassed hotel guests. Eloise's taunts are terrible, her imagination inimitable, her pace positively perilous. Her impertinence will delight readers of all ages. I(Ages 5 and older)/I

Product Description
P Eloise is a little girl who lives at The Plaza Hotel in New York. She is not yet pretty but she is already a Person. P Henry James would want to study her. P Queen Victoria would recognize her as an Equal. P The New York Jets would want to have her on Itheir/I side. P Lewis Carroll would love her (once he got over the initial shock). 1 out of 5 stars POOR ELOISE!!   September 13, 2008

My son was very disturbed about where the parents were. She wanted to know if the parents were mean and why they didn't love their own daughter. Yikes. I had never read Eloise before, but had heard it was cute. I guess it had its moments, but I do feel sorry for Eloise.

5 out of 5 stars Spunky, Sweet, Super fun!   August 8, 2008
Eloise At The Plaza is absolutely one of the best books you can find for children. Sure, the character isn't very polite, but when reading Eloise to a child, you can point out Eloise's downsides and laugh about her good sides, for she has many of them. I am a teenager, and I first read Eloise when I was six, actually. I got Eloise At Christmastime as a birthday gift. I have read all of the Eloise books except Eloise Takes A Bawth, of which I've read excerpts seen in stores.br /br /Eloise is a great character to reminisce over and have a great laugh with. These timelessly classic books are sure to bring a smile to your face and a thump to your heart. Eloise rocks! xoxoxbr /

1 out of 5 stars My little ones found it disturbing   July 17, 2008

My 6 year old received this as a birthday gift. I thought: wow, great, very nostalgic. After reading it to her, she gave me a funny look and said "I didn't like that". While it does have some charming moments, she seemed to us to be a sad and lonely little girl. Her fantasy about her doll getting in an accident and gushing blood and being sawn in pieces was really too graphic for my children, even though they knew it was being made up. Just found it sort of depressing. Where are the parents?

2 out of 5 stars not what I want my child to emulate.   May 12, 2007

interesting to read as an adult. Wouldn't want to read to a young child.

5 out of 5 stars ooh I just love Eloise!   August 12, 2006

Awesome book! Totally loved it--my three year old finds her fascinating. "Why does she want to pour a pitcher of water down the mail chute, mommy?" She's a naughty girl but such a wonderfully creative and self reliant one! I think she is a great role model for my little girls!
