blockquote p i"I've already drunk my fill of blood, so live a little longer. Breathe for a while and watch what's about to unfold."/i /p /blockquote p Thomas Ward has spent two years as the Spook's apprentice. He's faced unimaginable peril, and survived. But a new danger has emerged: an ancient water witch, Bloodeye, is roaming the County intent on destroying everything in her path. To strengthen his skills, Tom is sent to the far north to train with the demanding Bill Arkwright. Arkwright lives in a haunted mill on the edge of a treacherous marsh, and his training methods prove to be harsh and sometimes cruel. Will Tom's new bag of tricks be enough to overcome a critical mistake that leaves him confronting Bloodeye on his own? /p

4 out of 5 stars Creepy and fun for all ages!   December 23, 2008
Thomas Ward is a young boy serving as an apprentice to the "spook," a sort of wizard who is training him in the ways of magical arts. When an ancient water witch, the Bloodeye, emerges, Tom must use what he has learned to save the local towns from peril.br /br /The plot and the characters were truly engaging and quite entertaining, which I didn't necessarily expect from a children's book. The action and dialogue maintained a very well-paced read that made the book difficult to put down.br /br /Wrath of the Bloodeye is somewhat of a cross between RL Stine's Goosebumps series, and the Harry Potter books. It's something that can be easily enjoyed by all age groups. While I hadn't read any of the previous books in the series, I didn't feel as though I was missing anything in picking up this book. I would eventually like to pick up the rest of the series and read those as well, and I recommend this to people of all ages who are intrigued by all things mystical, magical, and a tad bit spooky.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not the place to start   December 23, 2008
I didn't know this was part of a series when I got the book. I was a little lost from the get go. It's definitely not a stand-alone book. The black pages with white writing at the start gave the book a dark mood before I ever started reading, and I think this is probably a book I would have liked if I had read the prior story.br /br /So, I think this book is worth reading if you enjoy light dark fantasy (hmm... light dark? Should that just be medium?). But it isn't an appropriate starting point for the series.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Read   December 15, 2008
I didn't realize it until I started reading it, but this is not the first in a series. Oops. However, the author did a good job of making inference to events to help us new readers learn how each character figures into the story. I know I'm missing a lot of references to events in the other books but it has made me interested in picking up the series from the beginning and catching up to this book. I do wish I had done that to begin with and recommend that action to anybody else interested in the series.br /br /This is the continuing story of Thomas Ward who can see creatures that others (me and you) cannot see. He is being trained (apprenticing) to be a spook to deal with the darker side of these creatures. In this book he is sent to learn from Bill Arkwright who takes a bit of warming up to but, in time, Tom learns what he needs to from him while searching for a witch named Bloodeye. There is an underlying subplot (much like the Harry Potter books) that is progressed in this book but the book almost stands alone with Bill and Bloodeye.br /br /This is a pretty decent read. I wouldn't put it up there with JK Rawlings work but I see some influence from her in this book. If you did like Harry Potter I'd recommend this as it falls within the same level of reading.

5 out of 5 stars Best book in the series so far   November 17, 2008

I discovered Joseph Delaney's young adult dark fantasy/horror series The Last Apprentice this past summer. Over the last few months I've barreled through each installment of the series and have yet to be disappointed. Delaney gets better with every book, and the series' fifth novel, Wrath of the Bloodeye, is no exception.br /br /Bloodeye picks up where Attack of the Fiend leaves off. The witch clans have brought the Fiend (the "Devil himself") into the world and he's after Tom. In order to protect Tom from the Fiend, his master the Spook sends Tom to train with another Spook, Bill Awkwright, in the northern part of the County. Tom learns new things about the dark from Bill, primarily how to fight the fearsome water witches that inhabit the swamps of the north. Among these witches is the terrible bloodeye, Morwena.br /br /In the tradition of the other books in the series, Tom must face his own fears to save his friends and fight the dark. Bloodeye offers some amazing twists, especially at the end. Pivotal decisions are made about Tom's ambiguous friend Alice that change the course of the series.br /Even darker than its predecessors, and bordering on the philosophical, Wrath of the Bloodeye is a fast-paced thrill ride from the first page to the last. Delaney knows how to keep the reader on the edge of their seat; the pages just fly by. One of the best books I've read this year without a doubt!

5 out of 5 stars From J. Kaye's Book Blog   November 8, 2008
This has to be the best series I have ever read. My middle son says it's better than the Harry Potter books. Both of younger kids (one girl/one boy) are in love with this series. br /br /In the Wrath of the Bloodeye, Tom is captured by a some really bad guys recruiting boys for an army. After this encounter, The Spook sends Tom to Bill Arkwright, an old apprentice of the Spooks, thing get harder and harder. For one there is a dangerous water witch out and about, Morwena. It's also said that she is the Fiends daughter. Also Bill Arkwright drinks heavily. There are also ghost in Arkwright's house. And then there's the Fiend. In the last book the Fiend was freed. And in this book he comes after Tom. Also Tom meets Grimalkin again.br /br /This is one of those series you don't want to start in the middle reading. That said, don't start in the middle of this series. Get a copy of the first book, Revenge of the Witch, and begin there.br /br /Your kids will thank you for it!
