5 out of 5 stars Whimsical holiday treat   December 14, 2008
What a fantastically adorable book! I'm not familiar with too many of Karma Wilson's stuff, but this just fit the niche for a Christmas story about big and loveable woodland creatures. The illustrations are bright and warm despite the winter setting and Wilson's rhymes are enchanting and surprisingly one of the few repetitive rhymes my class could stand.

Bear Stays Up For Christmas is a passable but ordinary book for young children. The "plot" concerns a bear who is wakened from hibernation by his forest friends, who don't want him to miss Christmas. The bear is sleepy, but - the book keeps reiterating - stays up. In fact, eventually the bear outlasts his friends, stays up ALL night, and provides some surprises for them. br /We expect children's books to be cutesy, and this one is...the art is cutesy too, and not terribly original. I suppose it's hard for any of us (I am of the grandma generation) to see a disparate group of cartoon forest animals and not be reminded of the Disney versions of Snow White and Bambi. Fortunately, the drawing style used in "Bear" is not particularly Disneyesque -- but it is not very compelling nor special either. br /As a parent and grandparent, I have to ask the question: Why focus kids' attention on a creature staying up all night on Christmas Eve? Don't parents want the kids to conk out around eight so they can um, greet Santa and then relax themselves? For me this is a real headscratcher.br /The religious quotient is very low in this book, in case anyone is wondering about that -- I don't really care, just thought I'd mention it.br /Wonderful children's books for Christmas include Carl's Christmas by Alexandra Day and On Christmas Eve by Peter Collington. I think both of these are out of print, though.br /I will take "Bear Stays Up" to my granddaughters, age 3 and 4, and read it to them - AFTER Christmas, when they may be less tempted to copy Bear's trick!

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Charming Christmas tale   December 8, 2008
Bear and his woodland friends celebrate Christmas the old fashioned way, snuggling in and just enjoying each other's company. Bear doesn't want to be hibernating through the holiday- he wants to spend it with his friends. This one is on our holiday bookshelf. My kids just love it!br /Mommy's High Heel Shoes

5 out of 5 stars Simply Delighftul!   December 1, 2008
This book is magnificent for toddlers! I have a hyperactive three year old who not only stays seated the entire time I read this book, he wanted to get involved with the storyline (act like the bear and get sleepy) futhermore he also requested me to read it 2 more times afterward! The pages are filled with oversized pictures/ drawings of Bear and his forest friends (more pictures than words), the type is easy to read even when there is little light, the storyline is simple and flowing with rhymes, the pages are thicker than my son's other paper books and its all wrapped up in a pretty durable cover. It was a big hit at Preschool as well - (durable too with all those preschoolers handling it). I will be looking for more Bear books in this series!

My five year old enjoyed this, but I found that I should have left it at "Bear Snores On". Just a bit too similar. Love the illustrations though!
