Product Description Born the son and grandson of military men, Senator John McCain from Arizona was destined for a life serving his country in the armed forces. Like many great men, he occasionally struggled with authority, but once he found his true calling -- flying naval aircraft -- his ideals and commitment to his country took him far.PFrom the low point of five years as a prisoner of war to the high points of raising a large, happy family and being chosen as the Republican nominee in the 2008 presidential election, Senator McCain has lived an incredible life driven by a love of his country and a desire to serve it to the best of his ability.PThis picture book biography, written with great love and insight by his oldest daughter, writer Meghan McCain, shows us the public John McCain and the personal John McCain in a way we've never seen before -- making this American hero come to life before young eyes.

A really beautiful book about an American hero December 15, 2008 This is a children's book for all ages that focuses on the character and heroism of Republican presidential candidate John McCain. Written by his daughter, it's a lovely tribute to her beloved father. The illustrations are gorgeous, and the book is written with fairly simple language.br / br /Our 4- and 12-year-old daughters both enjoyed the book. Much of it was over the head of the 4-year-old, but she didn't have any trouble paying attention until the end. The 12-year-old had learned some things about Senator McCain at school, but she wasn't aware of the fire he survived or all of the details of his captivity. She's obviously beyond picture books, but I think she enjoyed the family time.br / br /In short, this book is a nice keepsake of the past election and its subject a true American hero. I'm glad my family has a copy.br / br / br /

Teach Children What Makes Someone a True Hero December 2, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
In reading My Dad, John McCain by daughter Meghan McCain, I found myself hoping that this book becomes easily available to children through libraries, our educational system, and parents who want to provide great historical material for their children to read.br /br /Although intended to be a political book to help her father, it is much more than that. Meghan tells the story in age-appropriate language and truly helps children--and even adults--understand what makes someone a true hero. She also presents her father in a realistic way, not denying some of his youthful imperfections, but letting readers know how much he loves this country. She says her dad is "great," and effectively conveys why she believes this. The illustrations in the book are vivid and add much to the story.br /br /Young readers learn that the McCain ancestors have fought for their country in every American war since the Revolution. Meghan gives a brief summary of her father's life in the military, including a harrowing experience involving the Forrestal--an aircraft carrier.br /br /John McCain had already flown many dangerous missions when a missile blew the right wing off of his plane and it crashed. Thankfully, Meghan's dad had parachuted out, landing in a lake. He then became a prisoner of war, and his actions during this time showed just why he truly is a "great" man. br /br /I highly recommend this book for children, regardless of their parents' political affiliation. We all need to be reminded of what makes someone a "true" hero. Buy a copy for your children today!br /
Inspiring Life of John McCain November 20, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
"My Dad, John McCain" is a children's book written by his eldest daughter. I learned some things about Mr. McCain that I din't know previous. In a long ling a navy men, the book chronicles his schooling, decision to join the Navy, his war (and POW) experince, as well as his motivation for be active in politics. br /br /No matter what your poiltical stance, no one can deny he is a commited and brave man who dearly loves his country. He has depth of action that speaks louder than the words of shallow folks. He is also a family man and has captured the hearts of his children, which may be his hightest honor yet.br /br /This book was inspiring to read, the illustrations were nice. The words may be a bit too much for younger kids, but it is something to work toward. I am very glad to have read this and wish more people had before Nov. 4th.
My Kids Loved This Book November 13, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Sometimes in political campaigns, people get all angry at candidates like they are an opposing baseball team and they forget that they are real people and deserve to be celebrated and recognized as people. Childish name calling rips off SO many people when it comes to politics. br /br /In the case of John McCain, despite me formerly making judgments on him based upon information acquired through media, I was amazed to realize that I had so overlooked him as a person. br /br /In the book MY DAD, JOHN MCCAIN, Meghan McCain writes a lovely book about her father in language that young children can understand. Regardless of what he is thought of politically, I think it is a good thing for children to know something about famous political figures as PEOPLE not just from what razzle dazzle is (or in this case is not) force fed to us on TV.br /br /Meghan McCain is proud of her father, and everyone in my family was impressed with her simple yet direct explanations of why her father would make a good President of the United States, but also why she was proud of him and why she admires him.br /br /Such a book is good for children to read- it shows a daughter who is very proud of her father- and for good reason, John McCain is a hero for the United States.br /br /Although she explains his prisoner of war experience it is very light weight for children- it will not overwhelm them. Also, she explains simply how many good and valuable qualities he has, determination being one of them.br /br /Lastly, the book is covered with very nice illustrations done by Dan Andreasen. They colors are lovely and the drawing/paintings are beautifully done. br /br /This book is an excellent book for young people to read about one of the many American Heroes , but especially because it is from a daughter that loves her dad.br /br /It is not the BEST book I have ever read, but it is a nice simple book.br /br /For anyone else to say anything bad about it, is just sour political grapes from someone who does not understand or value family or the heritage of the United States and should not be paid attention to.
