Product Description
DIVThe enchanter Count Harken is back to take his revenge on the Red King's heirs, starting with Charlie Bone's family! Charlie's ancestor has been kidnapped and imprisoned in the dark, forbidding land of Badlock, and it's up to Charlie to save him. Traveling through a painting to the terrifying countryside, Charlie and his best friend's dog, Runner Bean, take up the quest. But when Runner Bean gets trapped, Charlie needs the help of his friends. Can they get past an army of trolls, rescue Runner Bean and Charlie's ancestor, and get out before it's too late? pCan Charlie outwit Court Harken and his sinister troops, or will the prisoners be doomed to being held captive in Badlock forever?pppJenny Nimmo is an award-winning author who lives with her painter husband in a converted mill in Wales. Her books include THE SNOW SPIDER, winner of the Smarties Prize, EMYLN'S MOON, THE CHESTNUT SOLDIER, and GRIFFIN'S CASTLE, which was shortlisted for the Smarties Prize, the Carnegie Medal, the Whitbread Award, and the W.H. Smith's Mind Boggling Award. THE OWL TREE won the Smarties Gold Prize Award for six- to eight-year-olds, and THE CHARLIE BONE books have repeatedly found their way on to bestseller lists./DIV

5 out of 5 stars Continues the magic   November 23, 2008
Read this latest book in one sitting. I love reading children's books, especially those with a "make believe" or supernatural context. THe day after I finished it, it went to my husband's sixth grade class to make the rounds there. For anyone who loved the Harry Potter series, this series will ROck!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book!   November 13, 2008
This book was really good. I love the Charlie Bone series, now that there is no Harry Potter to look forward to these are the next best thing.br /They are children's books, but, just like Harry Potter and Little House on the Prairie they are very entertaining for adults also.

Charlie Bone is a great series. Recommended to all the kids/families I work with. No sketchy topics/material your kids shouldn't read. Fun read for adults too, I know several parents that follow this series.

Charlie Bone and the Shadow by Jenny Nimmo was a great addition to her series. I teach Science and also run the Literary Guild Reading Club for our school. So I like to read what the kids are reading. I also like to be able to recommend books to them that I think they will like. I have enjoyed the Charlie Bone series. Her writing is easily read and she has a nice use of words. The characters are well developed and the students relate to them well. She has a nice mix of good and evil characters with a lot of humor thrown in. The book is a nice length and the ending makes you anticipate the next book.

4 out of 5 stars at times exciting, at times slow   October 27, 2008

Not my favorite work of Ms. Nimmo. While some of the action in the book is exciting (such as when dagbert starts drowning people), Charlie takes more of a backseat in this story. He doesn't seem to be very effective in this book and the ending reveals a limited resolution at best. Poor Charlie isn't able to control his impulsiveness and he and Runner Bean get stuck in Count Harken's picture. His poor wand/moth gets stolen again as well. Charlie tries to save his friend and one of his ancestors from Count Harken's picture with limited success. Count Harken was at his devilish best in this book and it is unclear that Charlie can overcome Count Harken's new tactics. I left the book with the feeling that it ended in the middle of the story. Be prepared, there is a drowning in this story.
