5 out of 5 stars Truest form of UF I've encountered!   December 31, 2008
I'm primarily a PNR fan, recently venturing into UF. Kim Harrison was next on my, to-buy-list, after reading her great 'Hollows' reviews. br /br /So, here I was standing in the local grocery, when my eye caught KH's most recent release. Had it been calling me? It must have been a witchy-spell, with some pixie dust thrown in, because I suddenly had to have it, knowing full well there were 5 books preceding it---and I did NOT have them. My intention was to just peruse it, see if it looked interesting and then to order the rest of the series. Well, I started reading, 'The Outlaw Demon Wails,' and I couldn't put it down, even with no knowledge of the back-story. I was hooked! I was overtaken by the spell-of-contentment, impregnating this book! Hmm, KH has confessed some have referred to her as a witch. You just never know ;-). br /br /Some of the UF I have read crosses genres, with a lot of romance and eroticism. Now this can be delicious, if you're in the mood for it, but some may find it off-putting. This book stayed TRUE to its form...UF all the way. There are some romantic angles---but none of these situations seem forced, just to add titillating scenes. The focus remains on the world building and the character development of various demons, pixies, elves, vamps, weres and witches, along with their inherent skills. Some good---some bad, but all vividly brought to life.br /br /Rachel gets into a pack of trouble, which appears to be her MO, but her cast of unusual friends are there to prop her up, with Jenk's playing a pivotal and, yes adorable, role. Meanwhile, interactions between Rachel and Ivy become alternately fiery and testy---an enjoyable, and dangerous, creative twist. br /br /This story finds Rachel learning a great deal more about her family, her heritage and her powers. This sends her on a quest to learn how to use her skills more effectively. Her new knowledge is bitter-sweet and potentially life altering. On one hand, she is in awe of her potential, but on the other she feels dirty, violated and a demon pawn. She will be sharing breathing room with demon adversaries, after making a bargain she never dreamed she could make. Will it result in her demise? Can she resist the power of demonic manipulation? I guess these cliffhangers will be ferreted out in book 7.br /br /Some have written that Rachel is not likable and too whiny. This is what I liked about her most. It makes her more human to me, that she doesn't run into situations without fear and trembling. She is a woman, a daughter and a friend, first, then a witch, and, finally a bounty hunter. She doesn't come across as some type of superhero, emerging unscathed from her fierce encounters. She is vulnerable. Death can take her, she knows it, and doesn't want to die. br /br /I would not recommend reading this series out of order, as I did, but I sure can recommend that you jump on this series, if you're a UF fan, if you haven't already.

4 out of 5 stars Better   December 30, 2008
I was very cautious about bying this book, since I was so dissapointed in the ending of Few Demons More. But the first four books of this series were very good, so I decided to give it a last try. And wasn't dissapointed. It took me some effort to get 'into' the story. Slow start: lot of talk about her surroundings, mourning, more about her relationship with Ivy, backgroundinfo, etc. But halfway some very interesting things start to happen. More intrigue about Trent, Rachel, her family-connections and demon-politics, which I loved. Don't expect much romance. This book did not left me with the feeling that I missed and ending. Your look on Rachel will be different after finishing this. I am looking forward to Harrisons next installment.

5 out of 5 stars Great Series   December 27, 2008

Kim Harrison should me an example for other writers. By cutting out the massive amounts of erotic and having great plots, the books are well worth the money. Some sexy scenes which can be skipped if you want and do not interfere with the plot are the books I look for. Sadly this is not true for many authors.

5 out of 5 stars Rachel Morgan and the outlaw demonWails.   December 16, 2008
This is her latest book in the Hollows series. Like all of her other books, I love it. I hope she keeps writing! I enjoy this series very much.
