Amazon.com Review
Eoin Colfer's bestselling antihero is back in IArtemis Fowl: The Arctic Incident/I--the superb sequel to the hyper-hyped IArtemis Fowl/I, shortlisted for the Whitbread Children's Book of the Year. IThe Arctic Incident/I sees the slightly older, perhaps slightly more mellow arch-criminal Artemis recovered from his last adventure, richer now that he has his half of a hoard of fairy gold, and happier since the Clarice Starlingesque superfairy Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon returned his mother's ailing mind to full health.p But there is still much unfinished business: Artemis Fowl Sr. disappeared when a daring escapade designed to free his family from their criminal--not to mention deeply lucrative--past and move the family's assets into legitimate enterprises went horribly wrong. Held captive by the Mafiya (the Russian organized crime syndicate) for over two years, he has been declared officially dead, but Artemis Jr. knows in his heart (yes, he does have one) that his beloved father is still alive, and he is determined to find him. Meanwhile Captain Short is temporarily on assignment to Customs and Excise as punishment for letting Fowl separate her and her People from their gold and is finding her stakeout duties a little dull. It soon becomes obvious that the pair have need of each other's considerable skills, and before long they are on track for an adventure that will ultimately have far-reaching consequences for both of them.p If you enjoyed the first book, you won't be disappointed by the second. Initially the pace is a little slower, and the slightly more mellow Artemis is certainly a tad unnerving at first (particularly as one of the things that made him such an unusual character was the fact that there was something distinctly unlikable about him), but once the sparks between Holly and Artemis begin to fly, and the adventure that tests their endurance to their emotional, physical, and intellectual limits begins, the pages just keep on turning.p The high-tech hocus pocus, the complex underworld, and the James Bond-style storyline will keep even the most reluctant reader enthralled. Add to the mix a fair dollop of humor, the occasional sprinkling of right-on commentary about the state of the planet, and enough hooks in the story to ensure you will be clamoring for the next book. This chilling, thrilling adventure is a seriously cool (in more ways than one!) must-read for anyone age 9 and older. I--Susan Harrison/I

Product Description
Artemis is at boarding school in Ireland when he suddenly receives an urgent video e-mail from Russia. In it is a plea from his father, who has been kidnapped by the Russian Mafiya. As Artemis rushes to his rescue, he is stopped by Captain Holly Short of the Leprecon fairy police. But this time, instead of battling the fairies, he is going to have to join forces with them if he wants to save one of the few people in the world he loves.

3 out of 5 stars Fun fun   October 7, 2008
I preferred this to the first. Once again Colfer brings out his marvelous reimagination of Irish mythology to combine it with the technology of a not-too-distant future. It's an hysterical combination, and I have to say that this book brings in more heart than the first, as well as more passion for its loveable characters.

4 out of 5 stars Great read   September 28, 2008
This book is a great read. It leaves off a little after the second one where Artemis has to help the LEP. It's very exciting.

3 out of 5 stars Artemis the Criminal Hero   July 12, 2008
This was probably my favorite of the Artemis books. I loved learning so much more about each of the characters. It was fun to read Artemis as the criminal hero rather than just the criminal.

5 out of 5 stars Another Excellent Artemis Fowl   June 25, 2008
Purchased the Audio CDs for travel, and just like Book 1, Nathaniel Parker does an excellent job in narrating. If you enjoy Jim Dale (Harry Potter Series), you'll enjoy Nathaniel Park too. br /br /Book 1 picks right up with a ton of adventure and suspense. Like every Artemis Book, it leaves you wanting more.

5 out of 5 stars A great book   April 29, 2008

Have you ever thought that you would have to save your dad from a Russian gang? Most teenagers like to hangout, play sports, and play video games. Well, a smart 13-year-old boy named Artemis and his partner Butler are about to find out that their lives are not going to be normal or go as they planned. They have discovered the truth about Artemis' father. He is really alive and is being held by a gang called the Mafia. Artemis must go his own way to save his father from the Mafia who wants to hold him for ransom. Captain Holly Short and Commander Root are going to help Artemis. Butler and young Artemis have a difficult choice to make that will keep any reader intrigued. br / After I finished the first book I was really excited about starting the second book. This book is filled with so much magic and fairy technology, you won't want to put it down. Personally I think it reminds me of Harry Potter books because of the fairies, dwarfs, and also magic. If you like Harry Potter books or any fairy tale book then I recommend Artemis Fowl.br /
